Companies around the world are moving toward subscriptions instead of ownership, and Tesla is no exception. It is changing how it sells its "Full Self-Driving" (FSD) software. Starting February 14, 2026, the company will discontinue the $8,000 one-time purchase option. All new owners must instead pay a $99 monthly subscription. Elon Musk indicated this fee may rise as the system improves.
Legal and Financial Pressure
This shift follows several legal setbacks. A judge recently ruled that Tesla used "deceptive marketing" regarding its self-driving capabilities. Consequently, Tesla’s license to sell vehicles in California—its largest U.S. market—was suspended, though the order is stayed for 60 days. Additionally, the company recently lost a wrongful death lawsuit, resulting in a $329 million judgment. Federal and state regulators continue to investigate if Tesla misled the public about vehicle autonomy.
Financially, Tesla faces falling sales and shrinking profit margins. The subscription model aims to create recurring revenue to stabilize the company's bottom line and reassure investors.
Current Capabilities
Despite the name, FSD still requires human supervision. Drivers must remain attentive and ready to take control. Musk’s long-term goal is "unsupervised FSD," which would allow drivers to sleep or use phones, significantly increasing the software's value.
How does Tesla’s $99 monthly fee compare to other manufacturers?
GM (Super Cruise): GM typically offers a three-year trial with new vehicles. Afterward, the service costs about $25 per month.
BMW: BMW offers various "Features on Demand." Their advanced driving assistance packages generally cost between $20 and $30 monthly.
Tesla’s subscription is significantly more expensive than its rivals. However, Tesla markets its system as a more robust, "end-to-end" AI solution compared to the highway-focused tools offered by GM and BMW.
